Trip fuel and charging cost calculator
Enter the distance, your car's fuel economy or efficiency, and your own fuel or charging prices. Electric cars can add charging stops.
Your figures, not a quote. There are no default prices: every cost comes from you.
A planning guide, not advice.
Worked example
Made-up figures to show the maths. Use your own car's economy and today's prices.
Fuel: 500 miles at 45 mpg uses 500 ÷ 45 × 4.54609 = 50.51 litres. At £1.50 a litre that's £75.77, or £18.94 each for four people.
Electric: 300 miles at 3.5 miles per kWh uses 85.71 kWh. Charging 20% at home at £0.25 and 80% in public at £0.79 a kWh costs £58.46.
How it works
Fuel: litres = miles ÷ mpg × 4.54609 (a UK gallon is 4.54609 litres), or km × L/100 km ÷ 100. Cost = litres × your price per litre.
Electric: kWh = miles ÷ miles per kWh × (1 + charging loss). Cost = kWh × your home and public prices, split by how much you charge at each.
Charging stops: none if the trip fits in the first leg, range × (starting charge − arrival buffer) ÷ 100. Otherwise the rest of the distance ÷ range × (charge-to − buffer) ÷ 100, rounded up.
A return trip doubles the distance. There are no default prices: every figure is yours.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it ask for UK mpg?
UK mpg uses the 4.54609-litre imperial gallon. US mpg uses a smaller gallon, so a US figure would give the wrong answer. You can also enter L/100 km.
